Getting to work.

The Challenge

Wanting to get away from an ad-based business model, Adult Swim [as] wanted to re-engineer their app to allow cord-cutters to access all their content, ad-free, help users new to their programming discover new shows, and share content on social media.

My Role

Ideation, Wireframing, Prototyping, UI design.

Learning

Our team of two jumped into this project with six user interviews to get an idea of how people used television, and how they wanted to use it.

Based on our interviews we developed two key personas.

Meet Brian, a power user, and Roberto, a casual user of [as]. They have some frustrations that need to be addressed.

Solutions

friendSpy

Brian needed a better way to keep up with what friends were watching.

Now he can keep up with friends by tracking what they're watching, and earn badges while doing it.

Adult Swim likes this because it achieves their business goals of sharing on social media and content discovery.

Recommendation Robot

Roberto needed a better way to quickly and easily find new content.

Now he'll see system-generated content based on viewing history and trending shows, and curated theme-based playlists.

Adult Swim likes this because it achieves their business goal of content discovery.

The Happy Path

Thinking about how Brian and Roberto would move through the app to achieve their goals helped define and structure the app.

Sketching & Wireframing

Feeling out the design of each page within the app was a challenge. There was a lot of information to fit onto a small real estate.

Testing

An InVision prototype with these wireframes helped with usability testing. The results were prioritized to fit within my team's timeline.

Learnings

  • The [as] prototype was on brand and delightful to user testers

  • Issues with size and readability on the friendSpy screen

  • Too much information was packed into a friend's profile snapshot

  • Future iterations would include more screens and a more breathable mobile design
